The Database Column

I opened the database and found columns named 'field1', 'field2', 'temp', 'temp2', and 'new_temp_final'. Then I found 'pt_odr_numbr_id'. No normalization. Reports built with queries nested inside loops. The budget didn't cover the therapy. But I fixed it anyway.

CTO takeaway

The lesson, minus the scar tissue.

  • Never name a column 'field1' or 'temp_final'. It's not a shortcut. It's a cry for help.
  • Normalization is not optional. Denormalized databases create chaos, not speed.
  • If your report generation requires loops inside loops inside loops, you've already lost.
  • Renaming columns is painful, but it's cheaper than the therapy you'll need if you don't.
  • Every database rescue has a cost. Sometimes the cost is budget. Sometimes the cost is your sanity.
