The Rescue Job

A local car rental company. A 'simple API integration.' And a codebase that looked like it was written by a team of interns who'd never heard of functions. The story of how I turned a disaster into a win, with documentation so thick it could stop a bullet.

CTO takeaway

The lesson, minus the scar tissue.

  • Always do a code audit before quoting a timeline. The 2-day integration is a myth. The 2-week salvage operation is reality.
  • Refactor incrementally. Don't try to fix everything at once. Stabilize first, then improve.
  • Document everything. Even if they don't ask for it. Especially if they don't ask for it.
  • If the codebase is alive and hates you, stay calm. It's just code. You're smarter than it is. Probably.
  • Never underestimate the power of a good handover. That in-house coder will remember you either as a hero or a villain. Choose wisely.
