The Ad Avalanche

A client hires me to rebuild his article site. I set up WordPress, give him an ad panel, and get him all set. A month later he storms in, furious that nobody's visiting. Then I check the site. 100 ads. Popups. Cookie consent bypassed. And he's blaming me.

CTO takeaway

The lesson, minus the scar tissue.

  • You can build the best site in the world, but a client can destroy it with 100 ads in a day.
  • Always train clients on best practices. Document everything. If they break it, it's on them.
  • Cookie consent is not optional. It's the law. Bypassing it is a legal liability—for you AND the client.
  • Exit rate is the best metric for ad overload. 98% means something is very wrong.
  • Sometimes the best thing you can do is let the client learn the hard way—and be there for the rebuild.
