The Server Response Time

I'm explaining the importance of UI, UX, and server response times to a client. I'm pitching an innovative food ordering mechanism that reduces bottlenecks and validates coupons without lag. Then we cut to the fast food counter. The touch screens are offline. And I can't redeem a coupon without spending 30 AED.

CTO takeaway

The lesson, minus the scar tissue.

  • Every CTO who talks about 'seamless experiences' has stood at a broken kiosk feeling like a fraud.
  • The best systems are the ones that work when things go wrong. That's the real test.
  • Don't over-engineer. A simple coupon validation system that works beats a complex one that doesn't.
  • The user experience is not what you pitch. It's what the customer actually feels.
  • Sometimes the most advanced technology is a cashier who knows how to handle a coupon.
