Dental Diagnosis Platform
Spent 8 years turning a broken dental diagnosis platform into a compliant, scalable system that specialists and dentists could actually trust.
The Challenge
The previous engineering team had built something that worked in theory but failed in practice—unreliable diagnoses, inconsistent compliance, and a codebase that was impossible to maintain.
Dentists were submitting requests and not getting reliable responses, which meant patients weren't getting the care they needed in time.
The platform handled sensitive patient data and had to meet HIPAA compliance requirements—something the original architecture was not designed for.
With 8 years on the project, this wasn't a quick fix—it was a long-term rebuild while keeping the business running.
My Role
Fractional CTO and lead engineer—owning the entire technical stack for nearly a decade. Responsible for compliance, architecture, team leadership, product direction, and ensuring the platform delivered real value to dentists and patients.
What I Did
- Spent 8 years methodically rebuilding the platform from a broken proof-of-concept into an enterprise-grade system.
- Worked within a US healthcare environment where HIPAA requirements, patient privacy, and secure handling of sensitive information were important technical considerations.
- Redesigned the diagnosis workflow so dentists could submit requests and specialists could respond with confidence and clarity.
- Made the system scalable so it could handle growing volumes of dental requests without degrading performance.
- Built the technical foundation that allowed the business to grow its user base and expand its offerings over time.
- Owned the entire lifecycle—from technical strategy to hands-on coding, team mentorship, and stakeholder communication.
The Result
- Transformed an unreliable prototype into a compliant, enterprise-grade healthcare platform.
- Improved the platform’s handling of sensitive patient workflows with HIPAA-related privacy and security requirements in mind.
- Maintained and improved the system over 8 years, supporting continuous business growth.
- Built trust with dentists and specialists who now relied on the platform for critical diagnoses.
- Created a system that could scale with the business without constant fires.
Eight years on a single project isn't normal in tech. But this wasn't a normal project. It was a rescue mission that turned into a decade-long commitment to getting healthcare tech right. Starting from a broken system that no one trusted, I built something that specialists and dentists actually relied on—where a diagnosis wasn't just data, it was care delivered to a real patient.
The Technology
My Takeaway
“Healthcare tech demands a different kind of engineering. It's not about speed or scale alone—it's about safety, compliance, and getting it right. The 8-year timeline taught me that sometimes the most valuable thing you can build isn't a feature, it's trust.”
