Case Study #007

Local Car Rental Platform

Took on a 'simple' pricing API integration—and walked into a codebase so broken that rewriting the entire pricing model was the only option.

Mobility / Travel TechRescue Developer / Technical Lead

The Challenge

The client asked for a 'simple' integration—add a third-party API that would consolidate pricing from multiple sources. I opened the codebase and found PHP and MySQL that had been abused worse than any code I'd ever seen.

The code wasn't just bad—it was nonsensical. Random words slapped together that had crystallized over time into a behemoth that was completely unsalvageable.

Even simple features were tangled in a web of legacy decisions, copy-pasted code, and logic that made no sense to anyone.

The pricing system—the core of the business—was so brittle that any change would break something else entirely.

My Role

Rescue developer brought in to fix a 'small' integration—ended up owning the entire pricing model rewrite. Responsible for understanding the business logic, refactoring the codebase, integrating the third-party API, and delivering a working system without disrupting the live platform.

What I Did

  • Assessed the codebase and realized the only path forward was a complete rewrite of the pricing model—the existing code was unsalvageable.
  • Applied systematic refactoring principles to rebuild the pricing system from the ground up, making it maintainable and extensible.
  • Designed and integrated the third-party API to consolidate pricing from multiple providers—making dynamic pricing a reality.
  • Decoupled the pricing logic from the rest of the system so future changes wouldn't break the entire application.
  • Replaced random, non-sensical code with clean, understandable logic that the client's team could actually maintain.
  • Delivered the working integration while keeping the live platform operational—no downtime, no business disruption.

The Result

  • Successfully integrated dynamic pricing via third-party API—something the client had been told was impossible.
  • Completely rewrote the pricing model, turning a nightmare codebase into something maintainable.
  • Delivered the project without disrupting live operations—a win for the business.
  • Gave the client confidence that their platform could actually evolve without collapsing.
  • Turned a 'simple integration' that had stalled for months into a working feature in weeks.

When you open a codebase and the first thought is 'this looks like someone typed with their face,' you know it's going to be a rescue mission. The pricing system wasn't just broken—it was broken in ways that defied logic. But the business needed this integration to stay competitive, so rewriting wasn't optional—it was survival.

My Takeaway

Sometimes a 'simple integration' is actually a rescue mission in disguise. When you open a codebase and realize it's unsalvageable, the fastest path forward isn't patching—it's rebuilding. But you have to do it without breaking the business, without downtime, and without losing stakeholder trust.
