Emamo
Took the reins of an online events platform during COVID—transforming it from basic ticketing to a full-scale virtual event solution.
The Challenge
The platform was built for basic ticketing but COVID suddenly made it a mission-critical tool for businesses trying to survive by moving events online.
Demand exploded overnight—the system needed to handle way more traffic, more concurrent events, and more complex use cases than originally designed for.
As a senior developer taking on leadership, I had to balance feature velocity with system stability—no room for downtime when someone's virtual conference is live.
My Role
Came on as a senior developer and quickly took ownership of the technical direction. Responsible for architecture decisions, feature development, scaling the platform, and eventually leading the engineering effort.
What I Did
- Took ownership of the codebase and technical roadmap, transitioning from a senior IC to de facto tech lead.
- Architected and built new features for virtual events—streaming integration, attendee engagement tools, and social media promotion capabilities.
- Scaled the platform infrastructure to handle the massive COVID demand surge without sacrificing reliability.
- Shipped features rapidly while maintaining stability during peak usage periods for live events.
- Built out ticketing and event management systems that worked for both small creators and large enterprises.
- Improved the platform's sharing and social promotion capabilities to help event organizers reach wider audiences.
The Result
- Successfully scaled the platform to handle the COVID-induced demand explosion.
- Shipped critical virtual event features that kept the platform relevant during the pandemic.
- Maintained uptime and reliability during high-traffic live events.
- Transitioned the technical leadership and set the foundation for future growth.
When the world went virtual, Emamo became a lifeline for event organizers. The challenge wasn't just building features—it was building them fast enough to keep up with a market that was changing daily. By taking ownership of the technical direction, I turned a basic ticketing platform into a full virtual event solution that could handle the pressure of COVID-era demand.
The Technology
My Takeaway
“Sometimes the best technical leadership is knowing when to stop planning and start shipping. During COVID, perfect was the enemy of alive. The platforms that survived were the ones that could adapt daily—not the ones with the most elegant architecture.”
